Greenville, founded in 1786, was named for Nathanael Greene, a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He emerged from the war with a impeccable reputation as General George Washington’s most talented and dependable officer.
In June 2012, Greenville was ranked in the top ten of the nation’s “Best Small Places For Business And Careers” by Forbes magazine. At one point, the city became known as “BMX Pro Town USA” as it is home for many top professional BMX riders.
